Guardiola Eyes Redemption as Manchester City Travel to Arsenal

Posted : 19 September 2025

Manchester City face a crucial Premier League clash at the Emirates this Sunday, trailing both Arsenal and defending champions Liverpool in the title race.

City stumbled early in the campaign, losing two of their opening three games to Tottenham and Brighton, but have since responded with dominant wins over Manchester United and Napoli in the Champions League.

Last season’s 5-0 defeat to Guardiola’s former assistant Mikel Arteta at Arsenal was one of the low points in a trophyless campaign for City, who finished third behind Liverpool and Arsenal.

Reflecting on that game, Guardiola admitted, “We started like an under-14s team and gave away a thousand million goals.

The last 15-20 minutes were a disaster. We forgot to do what we had to do, and it was easy for Arsenal. I want to compete to be a better team than we were last season.”

Guardiola also took aim at critics who claim City’s six Premier League titles since his arrival are simply the result of financial power.

“If Arteta wins the title, it will be just because he spent money, not because of his work or players. It’s the same for Liverpool,” he said, highlighting the significant spending by his rivals this summer.

Arteta, who left City as Guardiola’s assistant in 2019, has gradually rebuilt Arsenal into a top contender. While the Gunners have only added the 2020 FA Cup to their trophy cabinet, Guardiola praised their progress: “Step-by-step, window by window, Arsenal is getting better.

Last season in Europe, they made an incredible step forward, and they are for me the most solid team. They don’t make mistakes in the back.”

City enter the weekend three points behind Arsenal and six behind leaders Liverpool. Their challenge is compounded by a tight schedule, having played their Champions League opener just 48 hours after Arsenal’s win at Athletic Bilbao.

Guardiola declined to comment extensively on the scheduling but noted that Ballon d’Or winner Rodri’s return from a major knee injury will require careful monitoring. “With him on the pitch we feel more comfortable, but after a tough injury you have to be alert. We will decide on Sunday how he feels,” Guardiola said.
