Guardiola Apologises After Cameraman Clash Following Manchester City Defeat

Posted : 24 November 2025

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed deep regret after his heated confrontation with a television cameraman following his team’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday. Guardiola, visibly angered by several decisions during the match at St James’ Park, appeared to vent his frustration at a pitch-side cameraman immediately after the final whistle.

Speaking on Monday ahead of City’s Champions League meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, Guardiola admitted the incident left him feeling uncomfortable. “I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I watch it back. I don’t like it,” he said. “I apologise to the cameraman. I am who I am, and even after 1,000 games I’m not perfect. I make mistakes, but I always defend my team and my club.”

City’s loss at Newcastle widened the gap behind Premier League leaders Arsenal to seven points, but Guardiola insisted his team must move on quickly, with their European fixture marking his 100th Champions League match as City manager. Reflecting on another milestone so soon after surpassing 1,000 career games, he added: “I realise I’m getting older, but it shows we’ve been competing every season at the highest level.”

Guardiola highlighted the importance of Europe’s elite competition for players and the club’s stature. City currently sit fourth in the Champions League standings, and a win against 21st-placed Leverkusen would strengthen their chances of securing a top-eight finish and avoiding a playoff—an obstacle that proved costly last season when they exited to Real Madrid 6-3 on aggregate.

“We are entering the final four games—two at home and two away,” Guardiola said. “Leverkusen are third in the Bundesliga, so it’s a massive match for us. Winning tomorrow and gaining one more point after that would secure qualification to the next round. We must stay focused.”

The City manager confirmed that midfielder Rodri will miss the game, along with Mateo Kovacic. On Rodri’s recovery timeline, he said: “Not long, but we don’t know exactly when. We’ll give him a bit more time to ensure he’s fully ready.”
