Green Beret FC incurs NLO Disciplinary Committee's wrath over assault on match officials

Posted : 11 June 2026

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has handed down severe sanctions to Green Beret FC following the club's involvement in the assault of match officials after its league fixture against Zamfara United.

In a decisive move aimed at protecting the integrity of the game, the NLO imposed a total fine of N1.5 million on the club and suspended the team alongside its officials from all league activities for two seasons.

The disciplinary action followed a violent incident that occurred after Green Beret FC's clash with Zamfara United, during which match officials were attacked, leaving one referee bloodied and requiring medical attention.

Reacting swiftly, the NLO Secretariat condemned the attack, describing the violence as unacceptable and damaging to the image and reputation of football.

The league body noted that the incident was not an isolated case, recalling a similar episode involving Green Beret FC during the previous season. It stressed that repeated acts of misconduct would not be tolerated and called on all stakeholders to uphold safety and discipline within the game.

As part of the sanctions, the original 2-0 victory awarded to Zamfara United has been upgraded to a 3-0 win.

The NLO further directed Green Beret FC to pay N1 million as punishment for violent conduct and an additional N500,000 to cover the medical expenses of the injured referees. Both payments are expected within seven days.

In addition, the club has been ordered to identify and present the individual responsible for stabbing a referee during the incident within 48 hours.

The NLO maintained that the sanctions serve as a strong warning against violence in football and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for players, officials, and supporters across the league.

These strict disciplinary actions demonstrate the league's unwavering stance on maintaining order and protecting match officials from harm. By enforcing severe financial and competitive penalties, the football body aims to deter future acts of hooliganism among participating teams. The decisions underline a broader commitment to sanitizing the domestic league and fostering a secure atmosphere across all venues.
