Greece Beat Germany 1-0 to Hand Klopp First Defeat

Jürgen Klopp suffered his first defeat as Germany manager as Greece claimed a historic 1-0 victory in Augsburg on Sunday, with Dimitrios Kourbelis scoring the decisive goal in the UEFA Nations League.

The result came in Klopp’s first home match in charge and followed Germany’s 1-1 draw away to the Netherlands in his opening game. Germany dominated possession for long periods but struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-organised Greek defence.

Klopp made five changes to the side that faced the Netherlands as he continued to assess his options. Hoffenheim forward Bambase Conté was handed his international debut, while Alexander Nübel replaced Marc-André ter Stegen in goal.

Germany enjoyed close to 80 per cent possession during the first half but could not turn their control into a goal. Karim Adeyemi came closest when his curling effort forced Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis into an important save.

The hosts continued to apply pressure after the interval, with Tzolakis again denying Germany from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick. However, Greece became increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack as Germany struggled to find a breakthrough.

The visitors went close in the 67th minute when Fotis Ioannidis fired wide after Germany lost possession. Seven minutes later, Greece finally found the opening goal when Kourbelis' low effort took a deflection off Kimmich before rolling into the bottom corner.

Germany pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Greece held firm to secure their first-ever victory over Germany after 10 previous meetings without a win. The result also moved Greece to the top of Nations League Group A2 with six points from two matches, while Germany remain on one point.

Klopp played down the significance of the defeat afterwards, saying the team needed matches like this as part of the process of building a new side. Germany will next face Serbia on Thursday before travelling to Greece three days later.
