Great Achievers halt Jaguar FC’s unbeaten run in Abakaliki

Already assured of a place in the South-East playoffs, Jaguar FC saw their impressive unbeaten streak come to an end following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Great Achievers FC in their final group game of the 2025/2026 Nationwide League One campaign in Abakaliki.

Despite securing top spot in the group with 16 points before kickoff, the Umuahia-based side approached the encounter with intensity and determination against a Great Achievers team desperate to avoid relegation.

The encounter produced a tightly contested affair with limited clear-cut opportunities for Jaguar FC, while Great Achievers looked more threatening in attack. Goalkeeper Ejimonu Smart, who had earned plaudits in the previous outing against Giant Brillars, once again delivered a solid performance with a number of key saves to keep his side in the contest.

However, the breakthrough eventually arrived on the stroke of halftime when Amoa Joseph reacted quickest inside the box to slot home after Smart had parried a dangerous free kick and Jaguar defenders failed to clear their lines.

In search of a response, Jaguar FC introduced captain Ekwunife Michael alongside Kichime Peter and Sunday Matthew in the second half to inject energy and stability into the midfield.

The tactical changes increased the pressure on Great Achievers, but the hosts remained resilient at the back and held firm to secure a vital 1-0 victory.

While the defeat denied Jaguar FC a perfect group-stage finish, attention now shifts to the South-East playoffs where the team will aim to continue their strong campaign and fight for promotion to the Nigeria National League.

The narrow loss serves as a timely wake-up call for the Umuahia-based side as they transition into the high-stakes knockout phase of the competition. Jaguar FC remains a favorite for promotion, provided they can rediscover the clinical edge that defined their successful unbeaten run earlier in the season.
