Grassrunners FC Crowned Ogunjobi Gold Cup Champions After 3-0 Final Win

Grassrunners FC were crowned champions of the 14th Ogunjobi Gold Cup after defeating Abakaliki FC 3-0 in the final at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. The Nationwide League One side completed an unbeaten campaign with a commanding performance to secure their first official trophy.

The final remained goalless during the opening 45 minutes as both teams struggled to create clear opportunities. Grassrunners had entered the match with confidence after beating Sunshine Stars 3-1 in the semi-final, while Abakaliki had defeated Ikorodu City 2-1 to reach the decider.

The deadlock was broken just two minutes after the restart. Abakaliki defender Hamzat Sheriff inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Grassrunners a 1-0 lead and forcing their opponents to chase the game.

Abakaliki nearly found an equaliser in the 58th minute when Nwose Emmanuel delivered a dangerous cross. Grassrunners goalkeeper Gideon Nwanzi reacted sharply to make an important save and preserve his side's advantage.

The pressure continued two minutes later as Abakaliki created two more chances in quick succession. Nwanzi again produced two crucial saves, keeping Grassrunners ahead and frustrating the De Rice Boys.

Grassrunners eventually doubled their advantage in the 70th minute. Temileyin Adelabu found the net to put the Nationwide League One outfit firmly in control and leave Abakaliki facing a difficult task in the closing stages.

Abakaliki were unable to find a response as Grassrunners maintained their defensive organisation. The champions remained composed until stoppage time, when Lasisi Musa produced the final moment of quality with a spectacular strike to complete the 3-0 victory.

The triumph capped a memorable 10-day tournament for Grassrunners, who had emerged as one of the leading sides from the early stages. They defeated Inter Lagos 2-0 during the competition and moved to the top of the standings before securing their place in the final.

For Grassrunners, the victory provides a significant boost ahead of the new season. Their unbeaten run, attacking consistency and ability to overcome strong opposition have given the club an important foundation after lifting the Ogunjobi Gold Cup on their debut in the competition.
