Lagos-based sides Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City suffered setbacks on Monday as the Ogunjobi Gold Cup pre-season tournament entered MatchDay 4 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.
Grassrunners FC produced one of the day’s biggest results, defeating Inter Lagos 2-0 to move to the summit of the standings with 10 points.
Ajibola Emmanuel opened the scoring in the 28th minute after capitalising on a defensive error, before Ubi Johnson doubled the advantage with a well-taken strike to seal a comfortable victory for Grassrunners.
In the other major upset, Abakaliki FC defeated Ikorodu City 2-0 despite the Lagos side enjoying 53 per cent possession.
Moses Amanekwu put Abakaliki ahead four minutes after the half-hour mark, while Chimaobi Metumareobi sealed the victory in the 88th minute after pouncing on a poor clearance from Ikorodu City to fire a half-volley into the net.
The victory lifted Abakaliki FC to second position with nine points.
Doma United also recorded their first victory of the competition, beating newly promoted NNL side Dokkal Khairu FC of Ile-Ife 3-1.
Haruna Abubakar gave the Savannah Tigers an early lead in the seventh minute, while Bitrius Philemon added a second in the 38th minute. Usman Nasiba completed the scoring in the 85th minute to give Doma United a convincing win.
Earlier, Stormers SC and Sunshine Stars played out a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming in the first half.
The competition takes a break on Tuesday, with MatchDay 5 action scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
