Posted : 06 March 2026

A new football development centre, Gran Hermano Football Academy, has been officially commissioned in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, marking another significant step toward the growth of grassroots football in the state.

The academy was inaugurated in a colourful ceremony attended by football administrators, sports enthusiasts, and members of the local community. The establishment of the academy further increases the number of football development facilities in the state dedicated to identifying, nurturing, and grooming young and promising talents for future success in the sport.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, Chikelue Iloenyosi, led members of the association to the commissioning ceremony, lending institutional support and encouragement to the new initiative.

As part of efforts to motivate the young players and technical crew, the Anambra FA delegation donated football kits and balls to the academy. The gesture was aimed at boosting the morale of both coaches and players while providing essential equipment needed for training and development.

Speaking during the event, Iloenyosi urged the management of the academy to approach the project with commitment and determination. He emphasized the need for the academy to begin operations immediately, remain focused on its objectives, and instill a deep and lasting passion for football in the young players under its care.

According to him, Anambra State possesses a rich reservoir of football talents scattered across its communities. He noted that with proper training structures, discipline, and consistent development programmes, academies such as Gran Hermano could play a vital role in discovering and polishing the next generation of football stars.

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the academy would serve as a breeding ground for future professional footballers, with expectations that raw talents nurtured at the facility could begin to emerge and make their mark within the next few years.

The commissioning of Gran Hermano Football Academy is widely seen as a positive development for grassroots football in the state, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen youth participation and create pathways for talented players to rise through the ranks of Nigerian football.
