Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has urged residents to embrace the unifying power of sports as a catalyst for peace, good health, and social inclusion.
Speaking at the 2025 Olympic Day celebration in Benin City, through his representative, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, Governor Okpebholo encouraged citizens to "rise and engage in physical activity" as a means of national and personal development.
“Olympic Day serves as an ideal occasion to move. Engaging in sport fortifies both our mind and body, promotes robust health and well-being, and fuels our aspirations,” he stated.
“Sport ignites our dreams, spreads joy, and fosters unity among us. It is a powerful tool for societal transformation. When we partake in sport, we embody the Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together. This is the magnificence of sport; it moves the world and transcends borders,” he added.
The Executive Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, officially declared the 2025 Olympic Day Run open, highlighting the event’s global and inclusive significance.
“Olympic Day is more than a commemoration of the birth of the modern Olympic Games; it is a celebration of the values of excellence, friendship, and respect. This run is not about winning, it's about participation, being active, and coming together as a community,” Enabulele said.
He commended the enthusiastic turnout and praised participants for embracing the Olympic spirit. “Your presence here is a testament to your commitment to health, sportsmanship, and unity,” he noted.
Enabulele also expressed gratitude to the event’s partners, sponsors, volunteers, and organizers for their critical support.
Organized by the Edo Sports Commission, the Olympic Day Run brought together athletes, residents, schoolchildren, and government officials in a spirited show of community and athleticism.
The run, held to mark the global celebration of the modern Olympic movement founded by Pierre de Coubertin, started at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Participants followed a route through Stadium Road, Ekhuan Road, Ring Road, Plymouth Road, and Akenzua Road before returning to the stadium to conclude the event.
