Goodman hails Iwobi, blasts Sessegnon for costly miss

Posted : 15 April 2025

Former West Brom forward Don Goodman has voiced strong disapproval of Ryan Sessegnon's missed opportunity during Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Monday night, especially given the quality of the assist from Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi.

The defining moment occurred in the 37th minute when Iwobi delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area. Sessegnon found himself unmarked but failed to convert, directing his header straight at Bournemouth’s goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.

That squandered chance haunted Fulham for the rest of the match, as they were unable to draw level before halftime and ultimately left the Vitality Stadium without a point.

While providing post-match analysis on Sky Sports, Goodman applauded Iwobi for the precise cross but didn’t mince words when discussing Sessegnon’s execution in front of goal.

“It was an excellent ball from Iwobi,” Goodman remarked. “But the header lacked purpose. Sessegnon had time and space—he simply didn’t make it count.”

Iwobi stood out once again for Fulham, showcasing his creativity and drive throughout the match. He continues to be a key figure under Marco Silva, contributing to the team’s attacking build-up with consistency.

This season, the Super Eagles star has been in fine form, scoring eight times and assisting five in 32 Premier League matches. His performances come at a crucial time, as Nigeria prepares for the Unity Cup in London and the continuation of their 2026 World Cup qualifying journey. Head coach Eric Chelle will likely rely heavily on the 28-year-old as Nigeria aims to return to winning ways.
