Gonçalo Ramos Fires Portugal to 2-1 Win Over Norway

Posted : 28 September 2026

Gonçalo Ramos stepped into Cristiano Ronaldo’s starting role and scored the winner as Portugal defeated Norway 2-1 in Oslo on Sunday to make it two victories from two in their UEFA Nations League title defence.

Portugal responded positively to their disappointing World Cup last-16 defeat by Spain, following up their 1-0 victory over Wales with another three points against Norway. The result leaves the defending champions with a perfect six points from their opening two Group A4 matches.

Ronaldo was named among the substitutes and remained on the bench throughout the match, while Ramos was handed the opportunity to lead the attack. The decision marked Ronaldo’s first time starting a Portugal match as a substitute since a Nations League fixture against Scotland in September 2024.

Portugal took the lead in the 17th minute when João Félix produced a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area after being set up by Pedro Neto. Norway had earlier threatened through Erling Haaland, who was denied by Diogo Costa after failing to make clean contact with Martin Ødegaard’s delivery.

Haaland continued to pose a threat and came close to equalising before half-time, but Costa made another important save to keep Portugal in front.

The Manchester City striker eventually found the breakthrough six minutes into the second half, tapping in from Patrick Berg’s header across the face of goal to bring Norway level.

Portugal restored their advantage almost immediately. Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland gave the ball away while attempting to play out from the back, allowing Ramos to collect possession and calmly chip the stranded goalkeeper.

Ramos almost added another later in the match, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Rafael Leão also came close when his effort took a deflection and struck the crossbar.

Norway pushed forward in search of another equaliser during the closing stages, but Portugal held firm to secure a valuable away victory. The result also ended Norway’s 14-match unbeaten run at home.

Ramos said the performance was an opportunity to demonstrate what he could contribute whenever called upon, with his 12th international goal ultimately proving decisive.
