Gombe United Relegated to NLO While Ranchers Bees Secure Historic NPFL Promotion

Posted : 23 April 2026

Gombe United have been relegated to the Nigeria Nationwide League One despite securing a victory in their final match of the season. The Savannah Scorpions defeated Ranchers Bees 2-0 at the Pantami Stadium on Wednesday in their NNL Conference D fixture. However, this result was not enough to keep the state-owned club in the second division.

The club finished the campaign in seventh place with 15 points. They ended level on points with Bichi FC but fell victim to a superior goal difference from their rivals. Head coach Yusuf Salihu and his players entered the day hoping for survival; however, the mathematics of the table ultimately worked against them.

In a contrasting turn of events, Ranchers Bees celebrated a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League. Despite losing the match in Gombe, the Kaduna-based team finished at the top of Conference D with 20 points. This achievement marks the end of a 26-year wait for the club to return to the elite level of Nigerian football.

Ranchers Bees had traveled to Gombe needing only a single point to guarantee their promotion status. While they failed to earn that point on the pitch, results from other venues fell in their favor. Their closest challengers, Jigawa Golden Stars, failed to capitalize on the Bees' stumble during their own away fixture.

Jigawa Golden Stars suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Kebbi United. This loss meant they finished the season in third place with 18 points total. Consequently, the path was cleared for the Bees to maintain their summit position and secure the sole promotion slot.

The relegation of Gombe United marks a significant low point for football in the state. They must now prepare for life in the NLO after a season defined by inconsistency. Meanwhile, the Kaduna football community is celebrating the resurgence of one of its most traditional and historic clubs.
