Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have suffered a setback in their preparations for the WAFU-B U-17 Championship after being forced to train on a poorly maintained five-a-side pitch in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian team had been scheduled to hold its final training session at the USFA football pitch on Tuesday evening ahead of Wednesday’s opening encounter against Niger Republic.
However, the players and officials were redirected to an adjoining facility after discovering that the owners of the main pitch had scheduled a friendly match at the same time.
The alternative venue reportedly had a termite-infested playing surface considered unsuitable for a team preparing for an international competition.
Efforts by Paul Okwudolor, manager of Nigeria’s U-17 national team, to contact the championship organisers over the development had yielded no response as of the time of filing this report.
The unexpected change reportedly left the players unhappy, but the technical crew has urged the youngsters to put the incident behind them and concentrate on their opening fixture.
The Golden Eaglets will face Niger Republic on Wednesday as they begin their campaign in Group B of the regional championship.
Nigeria, five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions, must navigate their group campaign against Niger and Côte d’Ivoire to reach the knockout stage.
The WAFU-B U-17 Championship serves as a qualifying competition for next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, making a strong start crucial to the Eaglets’ ambition of progressing to the continental tournament.
