Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets must win their final Group B match against Côte d’Ivoire to keep their semi-final hopes alive following a 2-1 defeat to Niger Republic at the WAFU B U-17 Boys’ Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The defeat at the Stade du 4-Août on Wednesday left Nigeria without a point, placing the five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions under pressure ahead of Saturday’s decisive encounter.
Niger Republic took a 1-0 lead into half-time before both teams scored after the break, with the Nigeriens holding on to claim all three points.
The victory also secured Niger Republic’s place in the semi-finals, strengthening their position at the top of Group B with four points from two matches.
Nigeria, who are yet to register a point, now face a must-win encounter against Côte d’Ivoire on October 17, with failure to secure victory potentially ending their campaign.
The Ivorians, who drew 1-1 with Niger Republic on Sunday, October 11, have one point and will also be seeking a positive result in the final group fixture.
With the group standings finely poised behind Niger Republic, the Golden Eaglets must produce an improved performance against Côte d’Ivoire to remain in contention for a semi-final berth.
The encounter is now a decisive test for Nigeria, whose hopes of progressing in the competition depend on responding to their opening defeat with victory in their final group match.
