Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have crashed out of the WAFU-B U-17 Championship in Burkina Faso after settling for a 1-1 draw with Côte d’Ivoire in their final group-stage match on Saturday.
The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of progressing in the competition following their 1-2 defeat to Niger Republic on Wednesday, which left them needing a victory against the Baby Elephants.
Côte d’Ivoire took the lead in the 16th minute when Alex Fousseni capitalised on a counterattack to put Nigeria under pressure.
The Golden Eaglets responded with sustained attacking efforts in search of an equaliser but struggled to break through the Ivorian defence.
Their persistence eventually paid off when Abiodun John restored parity with just two minutes of regulation time remaining.
However, the late goal proved insufficient to rescue Nigeria’s campaign, as the draw confirmed their elimination at the group stage.
The exit represents a setback for the Golden Eaglets, who had entered the decisive encounter knowing that only a win would keep their hopes of advancing alive.
