Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has called on his team to stay focused ahead of their Carling Knockout semifinal against Marumo Gallants at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, 9 November, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm CAT.
The KwaZulu-Natal side has enjoyed a strong run in recent weeks, including notable victories over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership and Sekhukhune United in cup competition. Abafana Bes’thende also thrashed Bahlabane Ba Ntwa 4-0 last weekend, marking three wins in their last four league matches, though they were humbled 3-1 by Orlando Pirates midweek. Despite excitement over potentially reaching their first final since the 2009 MTN 8, Mngqithi urged players to avoid complacency.
Arrows progressed to the semifinals with wins over Babina Noko (3-1) and TS Galaxy (2-1 after extra time), setting up a second encounter with Gallants in just seven days. Marumo Gallants, under Alexandre Lafitte, have impressed in the Carling Knockout, eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch en route to the last four, but have struggled in the league, losing three of their last four matches, including defeats to Arrows and Durban City.
Players to watch for Arrows is striker Junior Dion, who has enjoyed a prolific start since joining from AmaZulu in July. The 27-year-old leads the Betway Premiership with seven goals in 11 appearances, though he is yet to score in the Carling Knockout. For Gallants, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo could be key; the 30-year-old midfielder scored a brace in the cup quarterfinals but has yet to make a major impact in league play since returning from Orlando Pirates.
Head-to-head form favors Arrows, who have won three of their last five meetings with Gallants, with the remaining two ending in draws. Gallants have not beaten Arrows in this stretch, giving Mngqithi’s side a psychological edge going into the semifinal.
With both teams in contrasting forms, Arrows aim to build on recent successes and secure a spot in their first Carling Knockout final since 2009, while Gallants will seek to reverse their fortunes and extend their impressive cup run.
