Gold Cup Introduces New League Format for 14th Pre-Season Tournament

The organisers of the Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament have introduced a new league-phase format for the 2026 edition, replacing the traditional group-stage system in a move aimed at enhancing competition and improving clubs' preparations for the new football season.

The 14th edition of the tournament will be held from Aug. 13 to Aug. 22 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, with 10 clubs expected to compete under the revamped format.

Under the new system, each team will play five matches against different opponents in a single league table, with the top four sides progressing to the semi-finals. The winners of the last-four fixtures will then contest the final.

The organisers said the revised structure is designed to ensure every match carries greater importance while giving coaches more opportunities to evaluate their squads against quality opposition before the commencement of the 2026/27 domestic football season.

General Coordinator of the tournament, Tunde Shamsudeen, said the adoption of the league-phase model reflects the organisers' commitment to continuously improving the competition.

According to him, the new format will create a more competitive environment, as every point earned will directly influence the league standings.

He added that the format would also expose players and coaches to a wider range of opponents while providing football fans with more exciting and meaningful fixtures throughout the tournament.

Shamsudeen expressed confidence that the changes would further strengthen the Gold Cup's status as Nigeria's foremost pre-season football competition.

Since its inception, the Gold Cup has provided clubs with a platform for elite pre-season preparation while helping to identify emerging talents and promote competitive football ahead of each domestic campaign.

The introduction of the league-phase format marks another milestone in the tournament's continued evolution and drive for innovation.

The revamped competition is expected to provide clubs with a more demanding pre-season experience while reinforcing the Gold Cup's reputation as a key platform for preparation ahead of the new domestic football campaign.
