Gold Cup 2026: Grassrunners Stun Stormers as Ikorodu City, Inter Lagos Shine

Grassrunners FC produced the biggest surprise of MatchDay 2 at the 14th Ogunjobi Gold Cup, edging Stormers SC 1-0 to move top of the standings, while Ikorodu City, Inter Lagos and Sunshine Stars also recorded victories.

At the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Grassrunners secured their second consecutive victory through Ogunrombi Boris, whose 39th-minute tap-in proved enough to hand the Nationwide League One (NLO) side all three points.

The result lifted Grassrunners to six points and left Stormers without a point after two matches.

Inter Lagos also continued their impressive campaign with a 2-0 victory over Abakaliki FC in the day’s opening fixture.

After a goalless first half in which both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, Inter Lagos took control after the interval.

Monday Emmanuel broke the deadlock in the 51st minute before completing his brace in the 72nd minute to secure maximum points for the Lagos-based side.

Ikorodu City, meanwhile, bounced back strongly from their MatchDay 1 draw with Inter Lagos, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Dokkal Khairu FC.

Moses Ali opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Shola Bada doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute. Ikechukwu Junior completed the rout six minutes from time to give the Oga Boys a convincing victory.

Doma United, meanwhile, suffered another setback as they were beaten 2-0, marking their second defeat of the competition.

Abass Yakubu converted from the spot in the 71st minute before Gabriel Adepoju added the second six minutes later to condemn Doma United to another defeat.

With MatchDay 2 now concluded, attention shifts to Saturday’s MatchDay 3 fixtures, with teams expected to intensify their battle for points and a place in the next phase of the competition.
