The race for the 14th Gold Cup pre-season tournament crown enters its decisive stage today (Wednesday), with four teams set to battle for the two available final tickets at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Grassrunners FC, the surprise package of the competition and the only unbeaten side, will open the semi-final proceedings against Sunshine Stars at 10 a.m., while Abakaliki FC will square up against Ikorodu City at 2 p.m. in the second last-four encounter.
Grassrunners have enjoyed an impressive run since the tournament began, finishing the league phase at the summit after recording four victories and one draw. The Nationwide League One newcomers scored eight goals and conceded just two, underlining their defensive solidity and attacking efficiency.
They sealed their place in the semi-finals with a convincing 3-1 victory over Dokkal Khairu in their final group-stage outing and will now face a Sunshine Stars side determined to halt their remarkable run.
The second semi-final promises another intriguing contest as Abakaliki FC, fondly known as De Rice Boys, take on Ikorodu City.
Abakaliki earned their place among the final four with a strong showing in the group phase and will be banking on their impressive form to overcome the Lagos-based Oga Boys.
Ikorodu City, however, will be eager to rediscover their best form after suffering consecutive defeats to Abakaliki FC and Doma United during the league phase.
With a place in the final at stake, both semi-final encounters are expected to produce intense competition as the remaining quartet chase glory in the prestigious pre-season tournament.
