Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Defies Reduced Programme to Finish Africa's Top Nation

Team Nigeria overcame reduced medal opportunities at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to emerge as Africa's highest-ranked nation, finishing seventh on the overall medal table with 24 medals, comprising 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.

Nigeria was the only African country to secure a place in the top 10 among the 72 participating nations, ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, and Cameroon, which finished 11th, 12th, 14th, and 18th, respectively.

The impressive performance came despite the exclusion of wrestling and table tennis from the Glasgow programme—two sports that have traditionally contributed significantly to Nigeria's Commonwealth Games medal haul.

At the Birmingham 2022 Games, Nigeria claimed six medals in wrestling, including two gold, and added four medals in table tennis. Their absence in Glasgow considerably reduced the country's medal prospects.

However, Team Nigeria responded with a series of historic performances across several sports.

Samuel Ogazi produced one of the standout moments of the Games by winning gold in the men's 400 metres, becoming the first Nigerian to claim the Commonwealth title in the event.

In judo, Enku Ekuta ended a 24-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal after securing bronze in the women's 63kg category, while Temitope Adeshina earned Nigeria's first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the women's high jump with a bronze-medal performance.

Nigeria also recorded encouraging progress in swimming, with Abduljabar Adama advancing to the semifinals, highlighting the country's growing competitiveness in a discipline where it has traditionally struggled.

The country's wheelchair basketball team equally enjoyed a memorable debut, progressing beyond the group stage to reach the knockout phase and underlining Nigeria's continued rise in para sports.

Australia retained its dominance at the Games by topping the medal standings with 70 gold, 45 silver, and 56 bronze medals.

For Team Nigeria, the Glasgow campaign will be remembered not only for its 24-medal haul but also for the resilience shown in overcoming fewer medal events and delivering landmark achievements that reinforced the country's status as Africa's leading Commonwealth sporting nation.
