Ghana Sacks Head Coach Otto Addo Just 10 Weeks Before 2026 World Cup Kickoff

Posted : 31 March 2026

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially terminated the contract of head coach Otto Addo. This decision follows a disappointing 2-1 friendly loss against Germany in Stuttgart on Monday night. The Black Stars were moments away from a draw before Deniz Undav scored a late winning goal for the hosts.

This defeat marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Ghanaian national team under Addo's recent guidance. The team suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of Austria only last week. These poor performances raised significant concerns regarding the team’s readiness for the upcoming global tournament in North America.

The GFA released a formal statement on Tuesday morning to confirm the coaching change. The association thanked Addo for his service and wished him success in his future professional career. Officials noted they would announce a new technical direction for the senior national team in the coming days.

The 50-year-old former Borussia Dortmund talent coach had been leading the side since March 2024. His tenure was marked by tactical experiments that failed to yield consistent results in high-profile international friendlies. Fans and pundits had become increasingly vocal about the lack of defensive structure in the squad.

Ghana faces a difficult challenge in the 2026 World Cup group stages this June. They are scheduled to compete against England, Croatia, and Panama in the opening round. The sudden vacancy leaves the GFA with very little time to install a replacement and organize a training camp.

The search for a successor is expected to be fast-tracked to ensure stability before the team flies to the United States. Names of potential local and foreign candidates are already circulating in the media. However, the federation has not yet commented on specific targets for the role.
