Getafe Suffer Blow as Super Eagles Midfielder Uche Ruled Out for Season

Getafe have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026/27 La Liga season after Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche was ruled out for the entire campaign with a serious right knee injury.

Uche sustained the injury during Getafe's 1-0 pre-season defeat to AS Monaco on Thursday. He was forced off on a stretcher after a heavy challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, who received a straight red card for the tackle.

Initial assessments offered some hope that the Nigerian had suffered a severe contusion rather than a major structural injury. However, further examinations after the swelling reduced delivered a much more serious diagnosis.

An MRI scan confirmed multiple tears affecting the ligaments and meniscus in Uche's right knee. The 23-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy rehabilitation programme, according to Diario AS.

The injury is a particularly painful setback for Uche, who had returned to Getafe after spending last season on loan at Crystal Palace. He was hoping to make a stronger impact in Madrid and establish himself as an important player under head coach José Bordalás.

Uche's absence leaves Getafe without a key midfield option before the competitive season has even begun. The club's preparations had already entered the final stages, making the timing of the injury especially difficult for Bordalás and his coaching staff.

The incident occurred in the 78th minute of Getafe's friendly against Monaco. The Spanish side eventually lost 1-0 after Brunner converted a second-half penalty, but Uche's injury overshadowed the result.

The midfielder's injury is also a major concern for Nigeria. Uche will miss the Super Eagles' upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures as he begins his recovery.

His absence reduces Nigeria's midfield options at a crucial stage of the qualification campaign. The Super Eagles will now have to consider alternative options while Uche focuses on recovering from the serious injury.

Getafe are expected to support the midfielder throughout his rehabilitation as he faces a long road back to competitive football. The club will now have to reassess its midfield options after losing a player who had been expected to play a significant role during the new campaign.
