Germany's struggles continue: Defeated by Austria, Sane sees red in Euro 2024 qualifiers

Posted : 22 November 2023
In a series of international matches, Germany faced their second defeat in four days, succumbing to a 2-0 loss against Austria. The match took a sour turn for the Germans as Leroy Sane received a red card, marking the first such incident in his career.

Julian Nagelsmann, at the helm of the German national team, continues to grapple with challenges, securing only one win in his four-game tenure. This recent loss adds to a string of setbacks, including a draw against Mexico, a home defeat to Turkey, and now a stumble against Austria.

Marcel Sabitzer of Borussia Dortmund struck first for Austria in the 29th minute at Emst Happel Stadium, setting the stage for a difficult match for Germany. Leroy Sane's dismissal after the break further compounded their woes, and RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner extended Austria’s lead in the 73rd minute.

The resolute performance from the hosts secured a well-deserved victory, highlighting the struggles Germany is facing under Nagelsmann's leadership. Fortunately for Germany, they will host the 2024 European Championships, earning an automatic spot despite their recent form.

Meanwhile, in the final round of qualifiers, Croatia secured their place in the 2024 Euros with a 1-0 victory over Armenia. Ante Budimir's lone goal ensured Croatia's second-place finish in Group D, leaving Wales in third and necessitating their path through the play-offs. Despite Wales taking an early lead against Turkey, a 70th-minute penalty from Yusuf Yazici denied them an automatic qualification.

In other qualifying group action, France fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Greece, maintaining their unbeaten qualifying campaign. The Netherlands asserted their dominance in Group B with a resounding 6-0 victory over Gibraltar. In Group I, Romania claimed the top spot with a tight 1-0 victory over Switzerland, while Israel and Belarus secured respective wins, adding to the drama of the Euro 2024 qualification stage.
