Germany's Rudi Voller: Bayer Leverkusen's squad is strengthened with Boniface

Posted : 02 May 2024

Rudi Völler, the esteemed figure in German football, believes that Bayer Leverkusen's current squad rivals the strength of Bayern Munich during Pep Guardiola's tenure.

For the first time in their history, Bayer Leverkusen has clinched the Bundesliga title and is poised to achieve a historic treble, having secured a spot in the DFB-Pokal final and the Europa League semifinals.

During the previous summer transfer window, Bayer Leverkusen made significant signings including Victor Boniface, Nathan Tella, Granit Xhaka, Jonas Hofmann, Arthur, Matej Kovar, and Alejandro Grimaldo.

Victor Boniface, acquired from Royale Union St. Gilloise for approximately 20 million euros, has made a notable impact in his debut season in Germany, contributing to 28 goals in 30 matches.

Despite a formidable performance, Boniface faced setbacks due to a severe injury sustained during Nigeria's pre-Africa Cup of Nations training camp in the United Arab Emirates, sidelining him for three months.

Boniface arrived at Bayer Leverkusen with a reputation following his standout performances in the previous season's Europa League, where he emerged as the competition's top scorer with six goals.

Rudi Völler attributes Bayer Leverkusen's successful campaign to the cohesive and talented squad assembled by manager Xabi Alonso, praising the tactical prowess that makes them appear formidable on the pitch.

Völler commended the contributions of key players such as Granit Xhaka in midfield, Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo on the wings, and the striking duo of Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick.

With a versatile and skillful lineup, including standout performer Florian, Völler recognizes Bayer Leverkusen's position as a force to be reckoned with in world football.

Acknowledging Boniface's impact, the 23-year-old received Bundesliga Rookie of the Month accolades for August, September, October, and November, further cementing his status as a rising star in the league.
