Germany Hit Seven Past Curacao as Japan Battle Back and Iran Arrive Amid Tensions at World Cup

Posted : 15 June 2026

Germany began their World Cup campaign in dominant fashion with a 7-1 victory over debutants Curacao, while Japan produced a spirited comeback to earn a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in a dramatic day of action across the tournament. Off the pitch, Iran’s arrival in the United States was overshadowed by ongoing political tensions and logistical challenges ahead of their opening match.

Curacao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, made a dream start in Houston when Livano Comenencia scored their first-ever goal at the tournament to briefly level the match against four-time champions Germany. However, the early joy was short-lived as Germany quickly asserted control, with Felix Nmecha opening the scoring before Kai Havertz struck twice, including a penalty.

Germany, who have struggled for consistency in recent World Cups, delivered a commanding performance to secure a convincing opening win. It marked the first time since 2014 that they have won their opening match at a World Cup, a sign of renewed confidence under Julian Nagelsmann.

Despite the heavy defeat, Curacao coach Dick Advocaat praised his side’s effort, insisting there was no shame in their performance against one of the tournament favourites. The Caribbean side will now turn their attention to upcoming Group E fixtures against Ecuador and Ivory Coast.

Elsewhere, Japan produced a resilient display to come from behind twice against the Netherlands in Arlington, Texas. Virgil van Dijk had put the Dutch ahead with a powerful header, but Japan responded immediately through Keito Nakamura to restore parity.

The Netherlands regained the lead in the second half through a superb curled finish from Crysencio Summerville, only for Japan to snatch a late equaliser in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada’s deflected effort found the net to secure a valuable point.

In another Group E match, Ivory Coast secured a dramatic 1-0 win over Ecuador thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Manchester United forward Amad Diallo, strengthening their position in the group.

Sweden also impressed with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, led by a strong attacking display featuring goals from Yasin Ayari, Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Mattias Svanberg. Coach Graham Potter praised his team’s clinical finishing and overall dominance.

Meanwhile, attention off the field turned to Iran, who arrived in Los Angeles ahead of their opening Group G match against New Zealand. Their build-up has been disrupted by visa issues, relocation of their training base, and broader political tensions involving the host nation.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei admitted preparations had been far from ideal but insisted his players remained focused solely on football. He emphasised that the team represents all Iranians, both at home and abroad, and stressed that sport should remain separate from politics.

However, the atmosphere surrounding Iran’s participation remains highly charged, with planned protests from sections of the Iranian diaspora and heightened security concerns ahead of their opening match. Despite this, the team maintains that its sole focus is delivering strong performances on the pitch as the tournament continues.
