Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup after sustaining a serious ankle injury during his side’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. The 26-year-old centre-back was forced off at half-time and replaced by Antonio Rüdiger.
Medical assessments confirmed that Schlotterbeck has suffered damage to the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle. Germany stated that the Borussia Dortmund defender will be sidelined for several months, although he will stay with the squad in the United States for the time being.
The injury is a major setback for Germany, who have already secured top spot in Group E and a place in the Round of 32 ahead of their final group match against Ecuador. However, tournament rules prevent them from calling up a replacement at this stage.
Schlotterbeck had featured in Germany’s opening 7-1 win over Curaçao, where he also scored, underlining his importance both defensively and in build-up play. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann praised his contributions, describing him as a key part of the team’s defensive structure and expressing sympathy over the timing of the injury.
Germany will now rely on Jonathan Tah, Rüdiger, Waldemar Anton, and Malick Thiaw as their remaining central defensive options for the rest of the tournament.
Schlotterbeck, who recently committed his long-term future to Borussia Dortmund with a contract extension until 2031, is expected to begin rehabilitation in the coming months as he focuses on recovery from the setback.
