Gareth Southgate firm on England commitment amid Manchester United speculation

Posted : 23 March 2024

Gareth Southgate, the current England manager, has firmly stated that he will not entertain any job offers until after Euro 2024. This declaration comes amidst speculation linking him to the managerial position at Manchester United, a move he considers "completely disrespectful" to the incumbent coach, Erik ten Hag.

Despite his England contract set to expire in December, Southgate has deferred negotiations for a new deal, emphasizing his unwavering focus on leading England in pursuit of their first men's international trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Addressing the media ahead of England's friendly against Brazil at Wembley, Southgate reiterated his commitment to his role as the England manager. He emphasized the importance of delivering success in the European Championship and condemned any speculation regarding managerial positions already filled, citing it as disrespectful. As the president of the LMA (League Managers' Association), Southgate expressed disdain for such rumors, highlighting his dedication to his current position and responsibilities.

Reports suggest that Southgate maintains positive relationships with key figures at Manchester United, including Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth, fueling further speculation about his potential move to Old Trafford.

However, Southgate's impressive track record, which includes leading England to the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of the 2021 European Championship, underscores his value as a manager. Despite the allure of managerial opportunities elsewhere, Southgate remains steadfast in his commitment to seeing through England's Euro 2024 campaign.

Southgate reaffirmed his stance on addressing any potential offers only after the conclusion of Euro 2024, maintaining that his primary focus remains on the upcoming tournament. He emphasized that signing a new contract before the Euros would raise questions about his commitment and desire to prove himself on the international stage.

With eight years already invested in his role as England manager, Southgate remains resolute in his approach, asserting that he will not engage in discussions with any other parties while fulfilling his duties with the national team.
