Galatasaray Striker Victor Osimhen Expresses Bitter Pain Over Nigeria World Cup Qualification Failure

Posted : 17 June 2026

Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen has expressed his immense grief regarding the Super Eagles' inability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The prolific striker confessed that coming to terms with missing the global football tournament has been incredibly difficult. The continuous absence of the three-time African champions remains a heavily debated topic across the continent as the tournament gets underway.

The West African giants initially missed out on automatic qualification from their group after finishing behind South Africa. However, the Super Eagles were presented with a secondary opportunity through the continental playoff brackets. Eric Chelle's side secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Gabon in the semi-finals to setup a high-stakes final showdown.

The decisive qualification fixture on neutral territory in Rabat saw Nigeria battle the Democratic Republic of Congo. The two teams fought hard during a grueling 120 minutes of football that finished in a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately for Nigeria, the talismanic Osimhen had to be substituted at halftime due to a leg injury. The Leopards eventually held their nerve to win the subsequent penalty shootout 4-3 and claim the World Cup ticket.

Speaking on the collective mood within the national team camp, the 27-year-old Galatasaray forward revealed that his international teammates share his profound heartbreak. Osimhen noted that missing out on a second consecutive World Cup tournament is a massive psychological blow. He stated that the players must now find a way to navigate past this setback and look toward future international assignments.

The former Napoli star had been in stellar form during the qualification campaign, notably netting a crucial hat-trick against Benin Republic. His absence from the global stage removes one of Africa's finest football talents from the expanded 48-team showpiece. The Super Eagles will now turn their attention toward rebuilding their technical and structural foundations under their current leadership.
