Future Eagles’ Unbeaten Run Ends as Ijachi Shines in Benin Defeat

Posted : 29 October 2026

Nigeria’s Future Eagles suffered their first defeat at the ongoing FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan, losing 3-6 to Benin Republic on Wednesday despite another impressive scoring performance from captain Timothy Ogar Ijachi.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s six-match unbeaten run at the festival, where the young Eagles had demonstrated attacking promise, with Ijachi emerging as their standout performer.

The captain scored twice against Benin to take his tournament tally to 11 goals, while Wisdom Boniface contributed Nigeria’s other goal for his second of the competition.

Ijachi’s remarkable scoring streak has been one of the major highlights of Nigeria’s campaign in Baku.

He opened his account in the tournament’s opening-day 3-3 draw with South Sudan before scoring again in the 2-2 draw with Jordan on Sunday morning.

The forward continued his impressive form with a brace in Nigeria’s 3-3 draw with The Gambia later on Sunday.

On Monday morning, Ijachi scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Cyprus before finding the net again in the 1-1 draw with Pakistan hours later.

He subsequently recorded a hat-trick in Nigeria’s emphatic 7-0 victory over New Caledonia, further underlining his growing influence in the team’s attack.

However, his two goals against Benin could not prevent Nigeria from suffering their first loss of the competition.

Despite the setback, Ijachi’s consistent performances have provided a major bright spot for the Future Eagles, with the captain demonstrating an impressive ability to find the net across different matches.

The defeat against Benin also offers Nigeria an opportunity to assess its defensive performance after conceding six goals in a match that ended their unbeaten sequence.

While the Future Eagles had previously combined attacking efficiency with results that kept them unbeaten, the encounter with Benin exposed the challenge of sustaining that momentum against opponents capable of exploiting defensive weaknesses.

Nigeria’s campaign in Azerbaijan has nevertheless provided valuable competitive experience for the young players, with Ijachi’s goalscoring exploits standing out as a significant individual achievement.
