Future Eagles Share Six Goals with South Sudan in Baku

Posted : 25 October 2026

Nigeria’s Future Eagles were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw against South Sudan in their opening fixture at the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday.

The six-goal encounter provided an early test for head coach Patrick Bassey’s side, who will need greater consistency in their remaining matches to improve their chances of progressing in the competition.

Both teams displayed attacking intent in the eight-a-side contest, but neither could find a winning goal in an entertaining encounter that produced six goals.

The result earned Nigeria and South Sudan one point each as the tournament’s opening phase got underway.

The Future Eagles arrived in Baku on Thursday with a 14-player squad and six officials for the international youth event, which runs from October 22 to 31.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group AD alongside South Sudan, Jordan, The Gambia, Cyprus and Pakistan.

Under the tournament’s distinctive format, matches are played over two 20-minute halves, with eight players from each team on the pitch at a time.

The competition is designed to broaden international exposure for young footballers, providing them with opportunities to experience different playing styles and develop their understanding of the game.

Following Saturday’s draw, Nigeria face a demanding schedule, with matches against Jordan and The Gambia lined up for Sunday, followed by subsequent fixtures against Cyprus and Pakistan on Monday.

Results from the opening phase will determine the performance tier in which each team competes during the next stage, allowing all participating nations to continue playing beyond the initial group matches.

For Bassey and his players, attention will now turn to converting their attacking promise into victories while improving their overall performance as the competition progresses.

The tier finals are scheduled for October 30, ahead of the conclusion of the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku on October 31.
