Furore Over Former NPFL Top Scorer Chijoke Mboama’s Contract Ordeal in Egypt

Former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) top scorer Chijoke Mboama has reportedly found himself in a difficult situation in Egypt, claiming he was misled by a football agent over a promised professional contract.

According to Mboama, who has been clubless for some time, the ordeal began when an agent contacted him through a trusted friend, offering a lucrative opportunity with an Egyptian club. The agent assured him that he would be invited for trials and, if successful, contract negotiations would follow.

Before traveling, Mboama stated that he made his conditions clear: if the club proved unsuitable, he wanted the freedom to return to Nigeria immediately. The agent reportedly agreed, covering all travel expenses and processing the necessary documents.

Trouble reportedly began upon his arrival. Mboama claims he was taken to an unfamiliar city near Alexandria and noticed immediately that the conditions at the club, Proxy SC, were vastly different from what had been promised. Feeling misled, he contacted the agent to request a return to Nigeria.

However, the agent allegedly retained Mboama’s passport, citing the need for a local identification card. When Mboama asked for its return to leave Egypt, the agent demanded reimbursement of all travel expenses — a total of $2,000 — before releasing the passport. Mboama attempted to negotiate by offering $1,000 and then $1,500, both of which were rejected.

With no club, no passport, and limited options, Mboama is now seeking help from the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt to resolve the matter. This incident highlights the risks many African footballers face when dealing with unscrupulous agents while pursuing careers abroad.
