France and Morocco Set for High-Stakes World Cup Quarter-Final Showdown

Posted : 09 July 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its decisive stage on Thursday as France and Morocco meet in one of the tournament's most eagerly anticipated quarter-final clashes at Gillette Stadium near Boston. With only eight teams remaining after a month of thrilling football and 280 goals in 96 matches, both nations are just three victories away from lifting the trophy in the July 19 final.

France have emerged as one of the tournament's strongest teams and will be aiming to repeat their victory over Morocco in the 2022 World Cup semi-finals. The match also carries extra significance for head coach Didier Deschamps, who is set to step down after the tournament following a remarkable 14-year spell in charge. Despite the attention surrounding his farewell campaign, Deschamps insists his sole focus is guiding France into the semi-finals rather than reflecting on his legacy.

The French coach also brushed aside concerns over the appointment of Argentine referee Facundo Tello, refusing to view the officials as a factor in the contest. Instead, he praised Morocco's quality, highlighting their technical ability, tactical discipline and attacking style while warning that they are fully deserving of their place among the tournament's final eight.

Morocco, guided by Mohamed Ouahbi, arrive full of confidence after another impressive World Cup campaign. The Atlas Lions have continued the momentum built from their historic run to the 2022 semi-finals and are determined to go one step further by upsetting one of the favourites for the title.

The winner of Thursday's encounter will face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals. Spain have yet to concede a goal in the tournament, while Belgium reached the last eight after an emphatic victory over the United States, ensuring another heavyweight contest awaits.

On the opposite side of the draw, defending champions Argentina continue their quest to retain the World Cup after surviving a dramatic comeback victory over Egypt inspired by Lionel Messi. They will face Switzerland for a place in the semi-finals, while England's reward for their thrilling victory over Mexico is a meeting with Norway, whose challenge is spearheaded by prolific striker Erling Haaland.
