Fourteen Records Broken as World Cup 2026 Rewrites Football History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup produced more than a new champion, as Spain lifted the trophy for the first time since 2010. The tournament also delivered a remarkable collection of individual and team records, with FIFA confirming 14 historic milestones achieved across the competition.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments. The 41-year-old also finished the tournament as the second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history, behind only Cameroon's Roger Milla.

France forward Kylian Mbappe added another landmark to his growing legacy by becoming the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history. He finished his World Cup career tally on 22 goals, moving ahead of Germany's Miroslav Klose and edging Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

Messi also enjoyed another historic tournament despite Argentina's defeat to Spain in the final. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner became the player with the most World Cup victories after recording 23 wins. He also broke the record for scoring in the most consecutive World Cup appearances with goals in nine straight matches and set a new mark for the most World Cup goals scored from outside the penalty area with seven.

Spain midfielder Rodri continued to dominate possession statistics by completing 790 passes during the tournament. The total surpassed his own previous World Cup record of 638 successful passes, which he set at Qatar 2022.

France winger Michael Olise rewrote another long-standing record after producing seven assists during the tournament. He moved past Pele's previous mark of six assists in a single World Cup, with five of those assists creating goals for Mbappe.

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon recorded seven clean sheets in eight matches, the highest total ever achieved in a single FIFA World Cup. Spain also conceded just one goal throughout the tournament, establishing the best defensive record by a World Cup-winning nation.

Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room matched Tim Howard's record of 16 saves in a World Cup match during a goalless draw against Ecuador. However, Room achieved the feat in fewer minutes than the former United States goalkeeper.

France coach Didier Deschamps became the manager with the most World Cup matches and victories, while Curacao's Dick Advocaat made history as the oldest coach to lead a team at the tournament at 78 years and 271 days.

Switzerland's Johan Manzambi became the youngest substitute to score twice in a World Cup match at 20 years and 247 days.

England's Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane became the first team-mates to score six goals each in the same World Cup. France's Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe matched the achievement later in the tournament, making 2026 the first edition to produce two such attacking partnerships.
