The 10th edition of the annual Taiwo Afolabi U-17 Football Tournament concluded with thrilling final matches at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena on Onikan Island, Lagos. The grassroots competition brought together some of the finest youth talent in the state. New champions emerged across both the male and female categories after weeks of competitive football.
In the boys' championship match, Fortune FC of Oshodi put on a dominant display on the pitch. They defeated FC Dynamos of Iwaya 2-0 to secure the coveted trophy. The champions controlled the tempo from the opening whistle; their tactical discipline prevented their opponents from creating clear scoring opportunities.
The girls' final provided a much closer contest between Labro Girls of Ipaja and Starlet Girls of Idimu. Both teams fought to a goalless draw during 90 minutes of regular play. The intense tactical battle had to be settled by a dramatic penalty shootout; Labro Girls eventually held their nerve to win 5-4.
The tournament featured 56 grassroots clubs from across Lagos State, including 32 male teams and 24 female squads. Preliminary matches took place at the Ojo Oniyun Sports Centre in Ebute Metta and the Anthony Mini Stadium in Gbagada. The competition was organized by the Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association.
The winners in both categories received a cash prize of N400,000 for their efforts. The runners-up walked away with N300,000. Earlier in the classification matches, Infinity FC defeated Apex FC 3-2 to secure the boys' bronze medal; Fela Queen beat Puma Queen 1-0 to finish third in the girls' division.
The competition was fully sponsored by the SIFAX Group to mark the 64th birthday of its Executive Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi. The business tycoon expressed deep satisfaction with the standard of play displayed by the youngsters. He emphasized that his decade-long commitment to grassroots football is fueled by a desire to empower Nigerian youth.
Afolabi noted that football remains a powerful unifying force across the globe. He recalled how Nigerian legends like Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, and Daniel Amokachi achieved global fame after starting from the grassroots. The chairman promised to expand subsequent editions of the competition to uncover more talents for the national teams.
