Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has confirmed a new development regarding Anthony Nwakaeme. The Turkish club has offered the former Nigerian international a position within their scouting network. This offer follows his official retirement from professional football. The proposed role will focus primarily on identifying and recruiting emerging African talent for the club.
The announcement comes shortly after the forward brought his playing career to a successful end. He helped Trabzonspor secure a 2-1 victory over Konyaspor in the Turkish Cup final on Friday. The 37-year-old winger had previously described the domestic cup final match as his final mission on the football pitch.
Club president Dogan explained that they want the Nigerian legend to remain with the team. He highlighted the player's immense football knowledge and strong character as key reasons for the decision. The club wants to utilize his experience; however, the final decision regarding the scouting contract rests entirely with the retired forward.
Nwakaeme departs the Black Sea Storm as one of the most admired foreign players in club history. Across two separate spells with the team, he scored 50 goals in 193 total appearances. He won every major domestic honor available in Turkey; these achievements include the Super Lig title, two Turkish Cups, and the Turkish Super Cup.
The forward remains the highest-scoring Nigerian player in the history of Trabzonspor. His most famous campaign occurred during the 2021/2022 season; he recorded 13 goals and 10 assists to end the club's 38-year league title wait. Supporters valued his impact so highly that they erected a bronze statue in his honor near the stadium.
He reportedly turned down lucrative offers from the United Arab Emirates to stay in Trabzon. Club officials heavily value his leadership role within the dressing room under coach Fatih Tekke. His international career with the Super Eagles was limited; he earned just one cap in a 2017 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.
