Former Nigeria national team coach Salisu Yusuf has officially reached an amicable agreement to terminate his contract with Republic of Benin top-flight club Coton Sport FC. The veteran tactical manager chose to depart the club despite enjoying an incredibly successful debut campaign abroad; a decision that has immediately put several elite clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League on high alert.
Under his expert technical guidance, the Beninese outfit experienced their most successful league campaign in recent history by securing a historic second-place finish in Ligue 1 with 62 points. Coton Sport also established themselves as the second-highest scoring team in the league; a feat that perfectly highlighted the fluid attacking philosophy and structural discipline implemented by the experienced boss.
This impressive domestic performance successfully earned the modest club a historic qualification ticket to next season's prestigious CAF Confederation Cup. It marks the first time in the history of the Beninese side that they will compete in continental competition; establishing a solid foundation for his successor to build upon.
Yusuf boasts a highly distinguished coaching resume on the domestic stage, having previously handled top Nigerian clubs including heavyweights Enyimba International, Rangers International, and Kano Pillars. The former midfielder also has extensive international experience; notably serving as chief coach of the Super Eagles and leading the home-based national squad to a silver medal at the 2018 African Nations Championship.
The highly respected coach is reportedly eager to explore fresh managerial opportunities closer to home in the Nigerian top flight ahead of the upcoming 2026/2027 season. Various local club managements are actively monitoring his availability, though his next official destination remains unconfirmed.
