Former Southampton and Royal Antwerp Forward Victor Udoh Passes Away Tragically Aged 21

Posted : 27 May 2026

The global football community has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of Nigerian forward Victor Udoh. The talented 21-year-old attacker was found dead in Abuja on Monday night while returning home for his off-season summer holidays.

Official details regarding the precise cause of death remain unconfirmed by local authorities in the Federal Capital Territory; however, multiple domestic media outlets have heavily speculated that the tragic incident is linked to suspected food or alcohol poisoning.

Former teammates and clubs have quickly led emotional tributes for the highly rated young prospect. Former Royal Antwerp midfielder Pierre Dwomoh expressed total disbelief on his Instagram account after speaking directly with some of Udoh's mourning relatives. Dwomoh revealed that he woke up to the heartbreaking message on Tuesday morning and initially believed the news was just a terrible dream. He added that both players had been in close contact recently to plan a joint summer training camp together before the tragic news broke.

English club Southampton released an official statement on Tuesday expressing profound devastation over the loss of their former academy scholar. The Saints extended their deepest thoughts and condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased star during this incredibly difficult period.

Belgian side Royal Antwerp also expressed immense dismay upon learning about the heartbreaking demise of their former forward. The club recalled his impressive breakthrough during the 2023/2024 season with the Young Reds where he scored 12 goals in 21 appearances before breaking into the senior squad. In total, Udoh made 28 official appearances for the Belgian Pro League outfit and provided two assists before securing his high-profile transfer to England.

Udoh originally developed his football skills at the Abuja-based Hypebuzz Academy before moving abroad to Belgium. He signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Southampton in February 2025 and featured eight times for their under-21 development team in the Premier League 2. He later chose to leave the South Coast by mutual consent to secure more regular senior football opportunities, ultimately signing a three-year contract with Czech division side Dynamo České Budějovice in October 2025.
