Former Premier League striker criticizes Mohamed Salah's touchline argument with Klopp

Posted : 30 April 2024

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton criticized Mohamed Salah for his touchline argument with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during Saturday's 2-2 draw at West Ham United. Salah, who was dropped for the game, clashed with Klopp as he prepared to come on as a substitute in the 79th minute. This incident occurred amidst Liverpool's struggles, as they now trail Premier League leaders Arsenal by five points after being eliminated from the Europa League.

Sutton expressed his disapproval of Salah's behavior, stating that the Egyptian forward was "out of order" and had crossed a line. Despite Salah being Liverpool's top scorer this season with 24 goals, his recent form has been underwhelming. While acknowledging Salah's past contributions to the club, Sutton emphasized the need to respect Klopp's managerial decisions and adapt to the current circumstances.

The former Premier League striker highlighted Klopp's authority to select the starting XI that he believes offers the best chance of winning. Sutton emphasized that Salah is no exception to this rule and that Klopp's decision to bench him should be accepted without disruption. Despite Salah's frustration with Klopp's decision, he was eventually guided away by teammates Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez, indicating a lack of harmony within the team.

Salah's future at Liverpool has come under speculation following the incident, with rumors of a possible move to Saudi Arabia circulating. However, Liverpool's ownership remains firm in their stance that Salah is not for sale.

As the club undergoes changes in its leadership structure, Salah's situation will undoubtedly be a key topic of discussion for sporting directors Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes. Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman echoed Sutton's sentiments, expressing disappointment in Salah's behavior and its impact on team dynamics.
