Former Nigeria U17 Star Umar Abubakar Scores as Famalicao Hold Mourinho’s Benfica in Thriller

Posted : 04 May 2026

Former Nigeria youth international Umar Abubakar continues to prove his worth in Europe after scoring a vital goal for Famalicao. The 20-year-old striker found the net during a tense 2-2 draw against Portuguese giants Benfica on Saturday. The result proved significant as it came against a side led by legendary manager Jose Mourinho.

Famalicao found themselves in a difficult position early in the match at the Estadio Municipal de Famalicao. Andreas Schjelderup opened the scoring for the visitors with a clinical penalty in the 13th minute. Benfica quickly doubled their advantage just six minutes later through a strike from Richard Rios. The first half ended with Mourinho’s men appearing comfortably in control of the contest.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the second half following a red card for Benfica captain Nicolas Otamendi in the 55th minute. Famalicao capitalized on the numerical advantage and began a spirited comeback. Mathias de Amorim reduced the deficit in the 67th minute with a well-placed finish to give the home side hope.

Abubakar, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, grabbed the headlines with the equalizer in the 78th minute. The Nigerian forward showed sharp instincts to divert a cross from De Amorim into the back of the net. This goal marks his second senior league strike for the club since his move from Belgian side KAA Gent last summer.

The former Footwork FC product has been increasingly involved in the first team throughout the 2026 season. His development in Portugal follows a prolific stint in Belgium where he scored 21 goals for Gent’s youth side. Famalicao manager Hugo Oliveira has gradually integrated the physical striker into the senior setup with several appearances from the bench.

The draw keeps Famalicao in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Primeira Liga standings. For Benfica, the dropped points are a setback in their pursuit of league leaders Sporting CP. Abubakar’s performance against such high-profile opposition further cements his reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents in Europe.
