Posted : 27 July 2026

Former Mali international Kalilou Traoré has died in a road accident at the age of 38, bringing an outpouring of grief from across African football. The former midfielder was best known for his role in Mali's historic third-place finish at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and for his spells with clubs in Denmark and France.

Traoré earned 17 senior caps for the Eagles of Mali and was part of the squad that defeated Ghana to secure the bronze medal at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa. His performances during that period established him as one of Mali's most dependable midfielders and helped the national team achieve one of its finest continental results.

At club level, Traoré enjoyed successful spells with Djoliba AC in Mali before moving to Odense Boldklub in Denmark. His impressive displays earned him a transfer to French side FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in 2012, where he made 11 Ligue 1 appearances. However, persistent knee injuries limited his progress and forced him to retire from professional football in 2014 at just 26 years old.

Following news of his death, FC Sochaux paid tribute to their former player, expressing condolences to his family and loved ones. Messages of sympathy also poured in from former teammates, supporters, and members of the football community, who remembered Traoré for his professionalism, humility, and commitment on and off the pitch.

Traoré's passing is a major loss for Malian football, with many remembering him as a key figure in a generation that restored pride to the national team through its success at the 2013 AFCON. His contribution to the Eagles remains an important part of the country's football history.

The former midfielder leaves behind a legacy built on determination and dedication despite a career cut short by injury. His achievements with Mali and his impact at club level will continue to be remembered by football supporters across Africa and beyond.
