The football community in Akwa Ibom State has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of former Akwa United striker Edem Akakatang after he collapsed during a novelty football match.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Oron Sports Stadium, where Akakatang was participating in a friendly game. Witnesses said he suddenly slumped on the pitch and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, the former striker was later confirmed dead.
Akakatang enjoyed a distinguished football career, playing for Ebughu United FC, Ecodrill FC, Akwa Starlets, Akwa United and Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Renowned for his eye for goal, he established himself as one of the notable forwards of his generation.
Although he had stepped away from professional football after failing to secure a new club, Akakatang remained passionate about the game. He continued to feature in community football competitions and All-Stars matches in his hometown of Oron.
