Football Can Boost Nigeria’s Soft Power, Says Ambassador Ita Enang

Posted : 06 October 2026

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Senator Ita Enang, has described football as a powerful tool for diplomacy and soft power. He made the remarks at a football networking dinner in Berlin attended by FIFA officials, coaches, scouts, consultants, diplomats and other football stakeholders.

Enang said Nigeria should do more to recognise its football legends and creative talents. He also highlighted the historic connection between Nigerian players and German coaches who helped develop some of the country’s notable footballers.

The ambassador argued that football can achieve results that traditional politics may struggle to deliver, particularly in promoting peace between nations. He pointed to international matches involving countries facing political tensions as examples of how football can create opportunities for engagement.

Enang said Nigeria’s football icons are important ambassadors for the country. He specifically mentioned former Super Eagles stars Jay-Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo as examples of players whose international careers have helped project Nigeria on the global stage.

The event also formed part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria-Germany relations through sports and cultural exchange. Nigeria and Germany have already expressed a commitment to expanding cooperation in areas including culture, education, trade, investment, innovation and people-to-people relations.

Enang further disclosed plans for Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Germany between October 20 and 25 with some Nigerian football stars. He said the delegation would help promote Nigeria, engage with German society and encourage young people through the influence of the players.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of grassroots football development. He said young players emerging from communities such as Agege, Ijebu and other local areas could become the next generation of Nigerian stars if given the right support and opportunities.

Enang urged stakeholders to build stronger pathways from community football to the international stage. His comments reflect a wider diplomatic approach that seeks to use Nigeria’s sporting and creative strengths to improve the country’s international image.

The ambassador also called for greater recognition of Nigeria’s sporting and creative icons. He said celebrating figures who have earned global respect can strengthen the country’s soft power and help inspire younger generations.
