Flying Eagles Target Second Straight Win to Close In on WAFU B U-20 Semi-finals

Nigeria's U-20 men's team, the Flying Eagles, will be aiming to strengthen their grip on Group B and move within touching distance of the semi-finals when they take on Togo's Sparrow Hawks on Thursday at the ongoing WAFU B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire.

The defending champions head into the encounter full of confidence after an entertaining 4-2 victory over long-time rivals Ghana in their opening match, a result that placed them top of the group on goal difference ahead of Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso also made a winning start by defeating Togo 3-1, leaving the Sparrow Hawks under pressure to secure a positive result against Nigeria to keep their qualification hopes alive.

For the Flying Eagles, another victory would lift them to six points and significantly boost their chances of reaching the last four before Sunday's decisive Group B showdown against the Young Stallions of Burkina Faso.

Nigeria's impressive opening-day triumph was inspired by Muiz Adeleke, who converted two penalties, while Olayemi Ayinla and Lucky Oraro also found the net to complete the win over the Black Satellites.

Ghana's goals came through captain Kelvin Nkrumah from the penalty spot and Mohammed Zaidan, with Nkrumah providing the assist for his side's first goal.

Head coach Abdu Maikaba is expected to demand another disciplined performance from his players as they continue their quest to retain the regional title and secure qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Ghana.

A positive result against Togo would not only underline Nigeria's title credentials but also give the seven-time African champions valuable momentum ahead of what promises to be a crucial encounter against Burkina Faso.

Victory over Togo would leave the Flying Eagles firmly in control of their semi-final destiny and reinforce their ambition of successfully defending the WAFU B U-20 Championship title. With confidence high after their opening win, Nigeria will be eager to maintain their winning momentum before the decisive clash against Burkina Faso.
