Flying Eagles Set for Fierce WAFU B Final Clash Against Undefeated Côte d’Ivoire

Posted : 23 July 2025

Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, are well aware they must be at their best to overcome the challenge of the red-hot Young Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Boys Tournament, scheduled for Wednesday in Accra, Ghana.

The Ivorians have been dominant throughout the tournament, winning all four of their previous matches. They began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso, followed by hard-fought wins over Niger Republic (1-0) and Togo (2-0) in the group stage. In the semi-finals, they displayed remarkable resilience by coming from behind to beat hosts Ghana 2-1.

The Flying Eagles, meanwhile, drew their opening match 1-1 against Ghana, with forward Mohammed Abdullahi scoring a crucial 84th-minute equalizer. They followed up with a commanding 4-1 win over Benin Republic to top their three-team Group A. In the semi-finals, Nigeria edged past Niger Republic 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time.

Wednesday’s final, set to take place at the Centre of Excellence in Prampram, promises to deliver fireworks. The President of WAFU B, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), is expected to attend alongside other high-ranking football officials.

For Head Coach Aliyu Zubair, this match presents an opportunity to further solidify his growing reputation, having led the Flying Eagles to the WAFU B title in Togo last year and securing a FIFA U-20 World Cup ticket at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Key players to watch for Nigeria include Mohammed Abdullahi and Ezekiel Kpangu, while Côte d’Ivoire’s attacking threats will come from Abdoul Bamba and Ali Kone.
