Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, have qualified for the Final of the ongoing WAFU B U20 Tournament in Ghana after a tense encounter against Niger Republic, which ended in a 4–3 penalty shootout victory following a goalless 90 minutes.
Throughout the match, the Flying Eagles showed determination and attacking intent but struggled to convert multiple scoring opportunities. In contrast, the Nigeriens maintained a compact and disciplined defensive setup, frustrating Nigeria’s offensive plays.
The first half saw the Flying Eagles register three shots off target, while Niger Republic failed to create any chance on the Nigerian goal. In the second half, the defending champions intensified their attacking pressure, attempting to break through a resolute Nigerien defense that effectively deployed a seven-man containment strategy.
With the match still deadlocked after regulation time, the game proceeded to penalties. Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt saved Niger Republic’s opening spot-kick, while Nigerian defender Tahir Maigana also missed his attempt. Despite the early setback, the Flying Eagles held their nerve, converting four of their penalties, while the Nigeriens managed to score only two.
The victory secures the Flying Eagles a place in the Final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final match between Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
