Flying Eagles Go Top of Group B After Emphatic Victory Over Ghana

Posted : 28 July 2026

Nigeria's Flying Eagles made the perfect start to their WAFU B U-20 Championship title defence with an impressive 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Ghana to move to the top of Group B.

The defending champions produced an attacking masterclass in Monday's opening fixture, overcoming the Black Satellites in a pulsating contest that showcased their quality and resilience.

Nigeria wasted little time in asserting themselves, with Olayemi Ayinla firing home a superb strike in the sixth minute to hand the Flying Eagles an early advantage.

Ghana responded positively and restored parity in the 23rd minute when Mohammed Zaidan found the back of the net to make it 1-1.

The Flying Eagles quickly regained control as Lucky Oraro's well-struck free-kick took a decisive deflection in the 30th minute to restore Nigeria's lead.

The advantage was extended eight minutes later after Nigeria won a penalty, with Muiz Adeleke calmly converting from the spot to give his side a comfortable 3-1 lead at the interval.

Head Coach Abdu Maikaba introduced Adamu Hussaini for Imrana Muhammad at the start of the second half as Nigeria sought to maintain their dominance.

Ghana reduced the deficit in the 60th minute after Kelvin Nkrumah converted a penalty, raising hopes of a comeback for the Black Satellites.

However, the Flying Eagles remained composed under pressure and gradually re-established control of the contest despite Ghana's spirited challenge.

Adeleke missed a clear one-on-one opportunity in the 84th minute, but the striker redeemed himself five minutes later by confidently converting another penalty to complete his brace and seal an emphatic 4-2 victory for Nigeria.

The result gives the Flying Eagles an early advantage in Group B and strengthens their quest to retain the WAFU B U-20 Championship title.

With confidence high after an impressive opening performance, Nigeria will look to build on its winning start in the remaining group-stage matches. The Flying Eagles' attacking display against Ghana has reinforced their credentials as strong contenders to successfully defend the WAFU B U-20 Championship crown.
