Flying Eagles Begin WAFU B U-20 Title Defence Against Ghana in Côte d'Ivoire

Posted : 22 July 2026

Nigeria's U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have arrived in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, ahead of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, where they will begin the defence of their title against Ghana's Black Satellites on Monday.

The defending champions landed in Abidjan on Monday before completing the journey to the tournament city by road. The team is camped at the Trio Corridor Hotel as preparations intensify for the regional competition, which kicks off this weekend.

Nigeria's opening fixture against long-time rivals Ghana will take place at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium, in a repeat of the previous tournament's final in Lomé, Togo.

The Flying Eagles defeated the Black Satellites 2-1 in that encounter to retain the WAFU B U-20 title and will be aiming for another winning start in this year's competition.

Coach Abdu Maikaba's side will next face Togo's Sparrow Hawks on Thursday before concluding their group campaign against Burkina Faso's Young Stallions on Aug. 2.

The Nigeria Football Federation has named a 23-man squad for the championship, featuring players drawn from clubs and academies within Nigeria and abroad.

The squad includes goalkeepers Lawani Clinton and Olayemi Ayinla, defenders Wahab Musa, Timilehin Agbonjimi, Odinaka Alfred, Somto Nnoli, Samson Joshua, Ebrima Manneh, Abdoulaye Agbeloye, and Habila Simeon.

Others are midfielders Imrana Muhammad, Saifullahi Yusuf, Israel Samuel, Sani Shuaibu, Oraro Lucky, Rufai Abubakar, Auwal Muhammad, Jamilu Yusuf, and Adamu Hussaini, while Abdulmuiz Adeleke, Abdullahi Ele, Gift Subi, and Aminu Yusuf make up the attacking options.

The Flying Eagles will be seeking another successful campaign as they continue preparations for future continental and global competitions.

A positive start against Ghana would strengthen Nigeria's bid to retain the regional crown and reinforce the team's credentials ahead of upcoming continental and international assignments.
