Floyd Samba Steals Spotlight With Two-Goal Manchester City Debut Against Norwich

Floyd Samba delivered a memorable first-team debut for Manchester City on Thursday, scoring twice as Enzo Maresca’s side defeated Norwich City 5-0 in the Carabao Cup third round at the Etihad Stadium.

The 17-year-old’s breakthrough came at a time when attention around Manchester football had largely centred on Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel and reports surrounding his future. Samba’s spectacular performance, however, quickly became one of the major talking points after Thursday’s cup action.

Promoted to City’s senior set-up following an impressive campaign with the under-18s, Samba was handed his competitive debut by Maresca. The teenager was asked to operate as a central striker despite having little experience in the position.

He took his opportunity in emphatic fashion. Samba opened the scoring in the 29th minute, directing a header into the net after Allan supplied the ball across the penalty area. Rayan Cherki then doubled City’s advantage before half-time.

Samba struck again nine minutes after the restart, curling a composed effort into the far corner to complete his brace. Allan also scored on his debut, while Ryan McAidoo added a fifth late on as City secured a 5-0 victory and progressed to the Carabao Cup last 16, where they will face Brighton.

The performance capped a remarkable rise for Samba, who has been with Manchester City since joining the academy at under-nine level. Last season, he scored 24 goals and supplied 10 assists for the under-18s, helping City win the FA Youth Cup with a memorable free-kick against Manchester United.

Maresca was impressed not only by the goals but also by Samba’s overall contribution. The City manager acknowledged that the teenager had not previously played regularly as a No. 9, but praised his energy, strength, finishing and decision-making while stressing the need to develop young players gradually.

Samba described the occasion as “mind-blowing” and said advice from City’s senior players helped him approach the match with confidence. He also made clear that he views the performance as the beginning of what he hopes will be a long career at the club.

His two-goal display earned him the man-of-the-match award and provided an eye-catching introduction to senior football. For City, it was another indication of the quality emerging from their academy, while for Samba, the night represented a significant first step into the first-team spotlight.
