Flamingos Target U-17 Women's World Cup Spot as Benin Visit Ikenne

Posted : 03 July 2026

Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, will begin the final phase of their quest for a place at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup when they host Benin Republic in the first leg of the final qualifying round on Saturday in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Only two matches now separate the seven-time African qualifiers from another appearance on the global stage. The Flamingos head into the decisive tie full of confidence after an impressive qualifying campaign that has underlined their status as one of Africa's leading youth teams.

Nigeria reached the final qualifying round in dominant fashion after defeating Guinea 11-0 on aggregate. The Flamingos overwhelmed their opponents across both legs with attacking flair while maintaining defensive discipline, highlighting the squad's balance and tactical growth under head coach Bankole Olowookere.

Following the emphatic victory, the Nigeria Football Federation and the coaching staff kept the team focused with intensive training sessions and competitive friendly matches. The preparations were designed to ensure the players remain sharp ahead of what is expected to be a tougher challenge against Benin Republic.

Captain Harmony Chidi has been one of Nigeria's standout performers during the qualifiers. The prolific striker scored five goals against Guinea and has combined clinical finishing with strong leadership to inspire the team throughout the campaign.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has also played a key role, contributing three goals in the previous round while impressing with her creativity and movement in attack. Queen Joseph is another player expected to make a significant impact, with her pace and direct style providing another dangerous attacking option for the Flamingos.

Nigeria's rich history in the competition adds further confidence. The Flamingos have consistently qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and achieved their greatest success in 2022 by winning the bronze medal in India, the country's best-ever finish at the tournament.

Benin Republic, however, will arrive in Ikenne determined to spring a surprise. They booked their place in the final qualifying round with an impressive 5-1 aggregate victory over Sierra Leone, demonstrating their steady progress in women's youth football.

Although Nigeria begin the tie as favourites, the coaching staff have warned against complacency. Discipline, concentration and taking scoring opportunities will be vital over the two legs as both teams battle for one of Africa's qualification places.

The second leg will determine which nation secures a ticket to the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Morocco later this year. A convincing home victory would put the Flamingos in a strong position before the return fixture.
