Flamingos Soar Into Historic U-17 World Cup Final After Brazil Demolition

Posted : 06 November 2026

Nigeria’s Flamingos have written a new chapter in the country's women’s football history, reaching their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after producing a commanding 3-1 victory over Brazil.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered an outstanding performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, Rabat, Morocco, to book their place in the final against Japan.

After several unsuccessful attempts to reach the ultimate stage of the competition, the Flamingos finally broke the semi-final barrier with an impressive display of attacking football, determination and clinical finishing.

The encounter began with both sides showing caution, aware that a place in the final was at stake.

Nigeria, however, gradually took control, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku testing the Brazilian defence before Queen Joseph came close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute.

Joseph's effort was brilliantly stopped by the Brazilian goalkeeper as the Flamingos continued searching for a breakthrough.

Despite Nigeria's attacking pressure, neither side found the net before the interval, leaving the contest delicately balanced at half-time.

The breakthrough finally arrived 11 minutes after the restart when Joseph found the back of the net to put Nigeria ahead, celebrating with Cristiano Ronaldo's trademark 'SUIII' celebration.

With confidence surging through the Nigerian side, midfielder Awawu Bashiru took centre stage, delivering a decisive contribution that effectively ended Brazil's resistance.

Bashiru doubled Nigeria's advantage in the 71st minute with an excellent finish before completing her brace nine minutes later to establish a commanding 3-0 lead.

Her double strike within nine minutes underlined Nigeria's attacking superiority and left Brazil with a mountain to climb.

The Flamingos' dominance was further reflected in their 30 attempts on goal, as they consistently troubled the Brazilian defence throughout the encounter.

Brazil managed to reduce the deficit through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but the late consolation did little to alter the outcome.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Nigerian players and supporters as the Flamingos secured a historic passage into the championship match.

The achievement represents a significant improvement on Nigeria's previous best performance, a third-place finish at the 2022 edition in India.

Attention will now shift to Sunday's final against Japan, who secured their place after eliminating defending champions North Korea in the first semi-final through a penalty shootout.

With history already made, the Flamingos will now seek to crown their remarkable campaign with Nigeria's first FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title.
